For the suites, we created over 500 artworks, including 425 sculptural pieces inspired by the Detroit River's south river mouth, 110 canvas artworks capturing Westin's "Sleep Well" promise with soothing striated clouds, and seven nature inspired hand-painted artworks for the signature suites.&nbsp;In the reception area, guests are welcomed by a ceramic installation comprising more than 200 hand-formed matte and gold lustre porcelain petals that adorn the two reception walls. Mimicking the fluid forms shaped by wind eddies, this installation invites guests to establish a meaningful connection with their surroundings right from the moment of arrival. In the fitness room, a vibrant 40 foot hand-painted wallcovering adds an energetic and painterly element to the space. A highly polished brass form rests above, with the viewers reflection partially obscured by the hand-patinated surface and hammered edges. The brass has been meticulously patinated and polished by hand – creating a striking contrast. The edges were carefully hammered and tarnished before being dry-fitted into the walnut frame. Inspired by the surrounding Rocky Mountain landscape, expansive Colorado skies, and the city's evolving urban fabric, the collection balances metropolitan character with moments of warmth and material richness, creating a cohesive visual language woven throughout the interiors. Developed in close dialogue with the architecture and interior finishes, each artwork was conceived specifically for its location, resulting in a fully bespoke collection. Throughout the residence, gradients of light and shadow, fluid movement, and subtle shifts in texture reference the changing qualities of the Colorado landscape—from layered mountain silhouettes to the soft tonal transitions of sunset. Serving as the focal point of the lobby, a suspended soft sculpture composed of more than 5,000 individually hand-dyed fibres cascades overhead, evoking the undulating peaks of the surrounding mountains. Varying densities and tonal gradients allow the installation to shift with changing light and perspective, creating an immersive experience as residents move beneath and around it. Complemented by carved plaster, wood, canvas, and layered finishes throughout the residence, the collection balances softness with structure, reinforcing the architecture while fostering moments of warmth, discovery, and connection. In the guest rooms and suites, we introduced layered artworks, including more than 30,000 hand-painted acrylic decals that flow across walls and ceilings—subtle reliefs that catch the light and unfold into shifting patterns. We also developed over 40 hand-torn and painted paper triptychs, each inlaid on limewash backings and finished in a custom palette, along with more than 400 custom framed prints designed for the washrooms. In the signature suites, sculptural works bring scale and presence. Canopies of hand-formed metal fins suspended from the bedroom ceilings evoke a sense of lightness and motion. Hand-turned wood and brass sculptural columns rise floor to ceiling within the niches, bringing warmth and tactility to the space, while a dimensional installation of vertical forms in a painterly custom palette cascades across the dining wall, transitioning from deep browns to warm ambers and soft neutrals. Hand-crafted ceramic petals introduce another layer of detail, their irregular forms casting shifting shadows across custom panels. Together, these works celebrate materiality, craftsmanship, and scale, and reference the mid-century modern sensibility that defines the property’s interiors, transforming the hotel into a layered and memorable guest experience. Wine Room Ceiling Installations We had the pleasure of bringing II BY IV DESIGN’s vision to life at SAMMARCO, where the ceilings become sculptural focal points within the space. In the main dining room, over 100 hand-poured plaster rays stretch across 77 feet, radiating from a custom oval medallion that anchors the space and draws the eye upward. The wine room offers a more intimate interpretation of the feature, centered around a custom-engraved medallion that echoes the main installation at a smaller scale. Inspired by the warmth and tonal shifts of a Tuscan sunset, the installations were designed to transform throughout the day as light moves across the hand-finished surfaces, creating a layered sense of depth, movement, and shadow. Inspired by the residence's refined design language and subtle mid-century influences, the program balances sculptural form, materiality, and local storytelling. The lobby is anchored by a custom relief artwork composed of hand-carved organic forms that reinterpret familiar mid-century geometries through depth, shadow, and form. A series of tactile mixed-media artworks, created through layered applications of paint and sand, further enrich the space with texture and materiality. Extending throughout the public areas, a curated collection of hyperlocal and RTP artworks draws inspiration from Ottawa's urban fabric, architecture, and landscape through abstract studies and photography. Inspired by the network of San Antonio's River Walk, we designed and oversaw the fabrication of 485 hand-woven seagrass wall sculptures. The compositions abstract the riverwalk's interconnected pathways into rhythmic woven forms, bringing texture, warmth, and a subtle sense of place to each guestroom. Complementing the woven works, we developed a series of layered laser-cut artworks featuring arch forms inspired by the hotel's architecture, each finished with a custom backing informed by the colours, textures, and material palette of the interior finishes. For the signature suites, we created a collection of site-specific artworks alongside curated ceramics and sculptural objects that reflect the character and visual language of San Antonio, extending the sense of place throughout the guest experience. In the public areas, our studio developed a collection of custom artworks and sculptures inspired by the Palacio's architecture and surrounding context. Spanning canvas, ceramic, plaster, and wood, the collection explores geometric abstraction and layered compositions through a warm, earth-driven palette that references both the building's distinctive forms and the textures of the surrounding landscape.
